Abstract
The 1874 diary of Lucinda Cornell focuses on her life at home as a homemaker and mother of four with family, friends, and acquaintances. She has two boarders living with her during parts of the year: Charley Rodgers and Belle Merriss(?). This diary begins with shopping lists and cash accounts listed by month. It includes information on deaths of known persons. Notable dates include:
January 9: Received news of Albert Harts death.
January 20: Mrs. Jackson, the young wife of the Cornell’s minister, died. Huck Bromley was found dead in a field.
February 24: Mrs. Foster died at 4 a.m. of heart disease.
February 25: Mrs. Devon, a local teacher, died of consumption.
March 11: Describes a visit to Otterbein University.
June 13: Mrs. Amanda Whitehead died.
July 11: Mrs. Samantha Guitner Jackson buried.
November 12: Mentions students at Otterbein are having quite a time about the trouble during the last rhetorical. Four have been suspended.
November 20: Jennie Ingalls got badly burned.
November 21: Jennie Ingalls died having lived 28 hours since she was burned.
