Abstract
The 1873 diary of Lucinda Merriss Cornell focuses on her life and work at home with family and with friends and acquaintances. She is a homemaker, the mother of three – Blanche, Abbie “Eva Diazy” Geneva, and Otto Cornell – and pregnant with a daughter born in September. This diary begins with shopping lists and cash accounts listed by month. It includes information on the marriages and deaths of known persons. Notable dates include:
January 4: Lucinda reports experiencing an earthquake at midnight.
May 9: Old Mrs. Spring died.
May 23: Judge Houghton died around 5 am of typhus fever.
July 1: Maria Beal married at church Presbyterian.
July 3: Katy Bright and Allen Young married.
August: Julia Hobbs comes to live with Lucinda (to help with housework).
September 14: Baby daughter born at 12 noon. (Honori “Ori” Cornell)
November 7: Old Grandma Barnhart died in the evening.
November 8: Julia went to Columbus for visit.
November 21: Emma Hinman died at 8 am in Fort Wayne Indiana.
December 5: Julia Hobbs called after 4 weeks of absence.
