Abstract
The 1875 diary of Lucinda Cornell focuses on her life at home in Westerville as a mother of four with family and with friends and acquaintances. She has two boarders living with her during parts of the year: Charley Rodgers and Belle Merriss(?). This diary begins with shopping lists and cash accounts listed by month. It includes information on marriages, births, and deaths of known persons. Notable dates include:
January 3: Old Mr. Wm. (William?) Scringer died at 9 am in Hillard.
January 14: Alice marries Henry Bishop; she and her new husband left Columbus on a train heading west.
February 25: Jo Mossman was accidently shot by his cousin Charley Akerson and instantly killed.
March 29: Dr. Hamerlton diagnoses Mr. Allen with cancer of the stomach.
April 5: Homer Phelps was shot by his nephew.
April 6: Emerson Samis was brought home a corpse from Ills. by his father.
April 27: The Cornell’s nearest neighbor, Mr. Warren H. Allen, died at 12:30 (noon).
April 28: John Cornell attended the postmortem examination of Mr. Allen’s body. The man’s liver was “full of ulcerated cancers and weighing about 10 lbs instead of 3.”
May 2: Belle, Charley, and John attend a temperance lecture.
June 19: John’s sister Alice J. B. came from Ills. for a visit with her 14-year-old step daughter Adella as well as Jennie Cornell.
July 12: Mrs. Mollie Shrock Clark died of “bilious colic.”
July 23: Lucinda mentions that the rainy weather is ruining crops.
August 10: Lucinda and Mrs. Brink attend a temperance meeting.
August 20: Went to reunion of 133 Regiment.
September 22: Mrs. Arnold died of “paralisis” (paralysis?).
October 23: First day canvasing to get subscribers for Arthurs home magazine.
November 14: Pearl and Emma’s baby girl, their first child, is born.
December 26: Mr. Egleston’s funeral (died on the 24th of consumption).
