Abstract
The 1869 diary of Lucinda Cornell details her life at home in Westerville, homemaking (churning butter, sewing, ironing, baking, etc.), caring for baby Blanche, and socializing occasionally with friends and family. Lucinda persistently describes experiencing loneliness this year, which is alleviated by the presence of baby Blanche and her mother’s frequent visits. Significant dates include:
January 12: The one-year anniversary of Blanche’s birthday.
March 11: First mention that John’s mother is very poorly.
May 12: John B. Cornell’s mother, Angeline, died at 2 PM after wasting away for months.
May 14: Mrs. Cornell’s funeral is held with a sermon by Vananda.
August 8: Peter Westervelt died at 2 PM.
August 20: Sarah Inkskip baby's funeral is held.
September 1: Lucinda, John, and baby Blanche moved into John Cornell’s old house.
