Abstract
The 1868 diary of Lucinda Cornell details her life at home. It includes information on births, marriages, and deaths of known persons. She evidently spent much of the year doing housework - churning, washing laundry, ironing, sewing, baking, knitting, etc. - and taking care of her newborn daughter, baby Abby Blanche. This year was hard for Lucinda, who reports being lonely, tired, and sorrowful in many entries. Significant dates include:
January 12: Lucinda's daughter Abby Blanche Cornell is born at 9 in the evening.
January 27: Hears news that Elder Brush committed suicide by hanging.
March 10: Lucinda's first born, her son little Harry, took sick a year ago on this day.
March 31: Mourns her son, Harry, who was buried a year ago on this day.
April 28: Left the old Cornell home where her 2 babes were born, the first of whom passed away, to move into Chever place.
June 9: Mrs. Carroll died 9 p.m. of heart disease.
October 6: Lucinda turns 36 years old.
November 22: Rena Brinkerhoff moves in to live with Lucinda.
