Abstract

Art therapy has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach, with potential applications for people with ADHD. To date, research on art therapy for individuals ADHD has focused mostly on children. The present study sought to add to the literature by examining the potential efficacy of art therapy and its relation to ADHD tendencies in a sample of emerging adults. Participants first watched a video mood induction and completed a pre-art therapy affect score. Then, participants engaged in a 30-minute collage-making exercise, after which they completed a post-art therapy affect score along with an ADHD Self Report Scale and demographics information. Results showed a significant difference in positive and negative affect between pre-art therapy activity and post-art therapy. Additionally, there was a significant difference between positive and negative affect scores post-art therapy activity. Results showed no significant relationship between ADHD tendencies and affect scores pre- and post-art therapy activity.  The implications of these findings, as well as the study’s limitations and direction for future work are discussed.
