Abstract

Stress can be chronic, debilitating, and difficult to effectively combat. Research on alternative methods for minimizing the negative effects of stress is limited. However, there could be untapped potential in alternative interventions yet to be empirically explored by researchers. One plausible alternative stress intervention may be found by examining whether the process of receiving a tattoo helps to alleviate stress symptoms. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine: if select physiological stress indicators are lowered during the tattoo process, whether self-report measures of stress correlate with those selected physiological responses, and if these outcomes have implications for how the process of tattooing can contribute to existing treatments for stress.
