Abstract
The Mathematical Theory of Records is a well-studied branch of mathematics. Many important results have been proven analytically, and this paper includes the most foundational distribution-free results with explanations intended to make the proofs of these results accessible to an undergraduate reader. Record Theory is also applicable to fields such as climatology and finance, and this paper discusses how Record Theory can be used to understand complex but highly relevant datasets, with the example of yearly maximum temperatures.
