Abstract
Lateral violence, also known as horizontal violence, workplace incivility, workplace violence, and bullying, among others is a well-documented phenomenon within the nursing profession with profoundly negative consequences. Lateral violence is a phenomenon that begins in nursing school. Over thirty years of research documents its existence, and yet the problem remains. This project focuses on a class of fifty-four senior nursing students to determine whether education is an effective tool to understand lateral violence and its impact on patients, nurses, healthcare organizations, and the nursing profession. The format of the project includes a pretest, a lecture style in-person presentation, and a posttest to evaluate changes in understanding the implications and management strategies of lateral violence within the nursing profession. The results of data collection indicate that the presentation format is an effective tool for creating a better understanding of lateral violence and its implications. Comments left by participants also indicate that information and management techniques be included in the curriculum so that students may feel more prepared when encountering lateral violence within clinical placements and into professional practice.
