The film is in Black and White, with Otterbein wearing dark uniforms and white helmets while Denison is wearing white uniforms with dark helmets. During the 1977 season the Otterbein coaching staff had the game films divided into Defense and Offense for instructional and evaluation purposes, instead of first and second halves.
DENISON University
Location: Granville, Ohio
Colors – Red and White
Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC beginning in 1983)
Coach: Keith Piper, 24th year: 0-8-1, (1954-1992, 38-years: 200-142-19, .580)
Nickname – Big Red, mascot “Big Red Buzzard.” Around 1920 Denison’s basketball team was a force to be reckoned with. A number of players were over six-feet and the team sported bright red uniforms. A Columbus sportswriter labeled the team the Big Red. For a period in the 1950s and 60s the mascot was an Indian. This was dropped in 1970 and replaced by a “Big Red Buzzard,” inspired by the red buzzards that populated the campus. Around 2018 the buzzards were driven off campus because of the damage they were causing to university buildings and facilities.
University Background – Baptist professionals established the university in 1831 as the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, later to become Granville College. In the mid-1850s it acquired its current name when it was renamed Denison University in honor of William S. Denison, an early benefactor. In the 1960s Denison dropped any affiliation with the Baptist church and became non-sectarian.
OTTERBEIN College
Location: Westerville, Ohio
Colors: Tan and Cardinal
Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)
Coach: Rich Seils: 3rd year, 8-1 (1975-1984, 10-years: 49-40-2, .549)
Nickname: Cardinals, the mascot is “Cardy.” Initially, as with most other universities, the athletic teams were referred to by their colors. In Otterbein’s case it was either the Tans or the Cardinals. When the State of Ohio officially adopted the cardinal as the state bird the term Cardinals started catching on. It wasn’t until after WWII that the nickname Cardinals became prevalent through the efforts of coach and athletic director Robert “Moe” Agler. However, there has been a long battle between using the term Cardinals or changing the nickname “Otters,” which is not used by any institution in the NCAA. Both nicknames are used interchangeably.
University Background: Otterbein University was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and named for United Brethren founder the Rev. Philip William Otterbein. After the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, in 1968, Otterbein has been associated with the United Methodist Church. It was Otterbein University from 1847 to 1917, when it changed to Otterbein College. In 2010, with the increase in courses and graduate degrees it reverted to its original name, Otterbein University.
