Maple Stadium, Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan

Film #1: Otterbein (Defense) 34 at Adrian (Offense) 14 (film 1 of 1), 14:39

The Otterbein Cardinals travel to Michigan to face the Adrian College Bulldogs. The film is in Black and White, with Otterbein wearing white uniforms and white helmets while Adrian is wearing dark jerseys with dark “Michigan” helmets. During the 1977 season the Otterbein coaching staff had the game films divided into Defense and Offense for instructional and evaluation purposes, instead of first and second halves.

ADRIAN College

Location: Adrian, Michigan

Colors: Black and Gold

Conference: Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)

Coach: Tom Heckert, 5th year: 4-4-1 (1973-1981, 9-years: 43-36-2, .543)

Nickname: Bulldogs. When athletic competition began in 1892 the team, as were most teams of the era, was known by their school colors at the time, Canary and Black. In 1926 the team was shutout by instate rival Michigan A&M (now known as Michigan State). In honor of their valiant play against a superior opponent the school paper referred to them as bulldogs and the name stuck. The mascot is known as Bruiser.

University Background: Chartered in 1845, Adrian College started as the Wesleyan Methodist Theological Institute founded at Leoni, Michigan. The institution later became Michigan Union College when it merged with the Leoni Theological Seminary in 1855. The college closed in 1859 and was moved to Adrian that same year. The college was transferred to the Methodist Protestant Church in 1868. In 1939 a denominational union of American Methodism resulted in the establishment of the Methodist Church to which Adrian was affiliated.

OTTERBEIN College

Location: Westerville, Ohio

Colors: Tan and Cardinal

Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)

Coach: Rich Seils: 3rd year, 8-1 (1975-1984, 10-years: 49-40-2, .549)

Nickname: Cardinals, the mascot is “Cardy.” Initially, as with most other universities, the athletic teams were referred to by their colors. In Otterbein’s case it was either the Tans or the Cardinals. When the State of Ohio officially adopted the cardinal as the state bird the term Cardinals started catching on. It wasn’t until after WWII that the nickname Cardinals became prevalent through the efforts of coach and athletic director Robert “Moe” Agler. However, there has been a long battle between using the term Cardinals or changing the nickname “Otters,” which is not used by any institution in the NCAA. Both nicknames are used interchangeably.

University Background: Otterbein University was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and named for United Brethren founder the Rev. Philip William Otterbein. After the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, in 1968, Otterbein has been associated with the United Methodist Church. It was Otterbein University from 1847 to 1917, when it changed to Otterbein College. In 2010, with the increase in courses and graduate degrees it reverted to its original name, Otterbein University.
