The Otterbein Cardinals hosts the Marietta College Pioneers for homecoming of the 1969 season. Unfortunately, at this time no game films of this contest exist. Should they become available they will be added at a later date.

MARIETTA College

Location: Marietta, Ohio

Colors – Navy Blue and White

Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)

Coach: Joe McDaniel: 8-1, (1966-1979, 14-years: 65-60-2, .520)

Nickname – Pioneers, the mascot is “Putnam the Pio.” Known in the early years Marietta’s athletic teams were called the “Blue and Whites.” In the late 1920s the college decided to embrace their reputation as the first seat of higher education in the Northwest Territory and adopted Pioneers as their mascot.

University Background – Marietta College began as the Muskingum Academy in 1797, the first institute of higher education in the Northwest Territory. It became the Marietta Collegiate Institute and Western Teachers’ Seminary in 1833, leading to Marietta College two years later in 1835.

OTTERBEIN College

Location: Westerville, Ohio

Colors: Tan and Cardinal

Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)

Coach: Larry Lintner, 3-5-1 (1966-69. Four years: 10-25-1, .278)

Nickname: Cardinals, the mascot is “Cardy.” Initially, as with most other universities, the athletic teams were referred to by their colors. In Otterbein’s case it was either the Tans or the Cardinals. When the State of Ohio officially adopted the cardinal as the state bird the term Cardinals started catching on. It wasn’t until after WWII that the nickname Cardinals became prevalent through the efforts of coach and athletic director Robert “Moe” Agler. However, there has been a long battle between using the term Cardinals or changing the nickname “Otters,” which is not used by any institution in the NCAA. Both nicknames are used interchangeably.

University Background: Otterbein University was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and named for United Brethren founder the Rev. Philip William Otterbein. After the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, in 1968, Otterbein has been associated with the United Methodist Church. It was Otterbein University from 1847 to 1917, when it changed to Otterbein College. In 2010, with the increase in courses and graduate degrees it reverted to its original name, Otterbein University.

Comments

Defensive halfback Thane Hecox intercepted a pass at the goal line with 12 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon to preserve Marietta College’s narrow 28-24 victory over a game Otterbein team before 3,900 homecoming fans in Westerville’s Memorial Stadium.

The interception wrote a disappointing climax to a fine Otterbein comeback in the fourth period and dealt the Cards their fourth straight setback and third in the Ohio Conference. Otterbein opened the season with a pair of non-conference wins.
