HIRAM College
Location: Hiram, Ohio
Colors – Union Blue, Infantry Blue, Crimson
Conference: Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), previously Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), North Coast Athletic Conference.
Coach: Joe Malmisur, 3-5 (1969-1982, 14-seasons, 51-74-2, .402)
Nickname – Terriers. Athletics at Hiram began in the 1880s but no mascot was chosen until 1928. In that year two mascots, Farmers and Mudhens, were discussed but neither caught on. During an athletic banquet at the end of the ’28 season head coach Herb Matthews compared the temperament of the football team to a “little bull terrier that holds on to the end.” The name stuck and from then on, the mascot has been a bull terrier.
University Background – Hiram was founded in 1850 as the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute by Amos Sutton Hayden and other members of the Disciples of Christ Church. On February 20, 1867, the Institute incorporated as a college and changed its name to Hiram College. James A. Garfield, who had been a student at the institute from 1851 to 1853 and then returned in 1856 as a teacher was one of the early principals. Garfield expanded the institute's curriculum. He left the Institute in 1861 and in 1880 was elected the 20th President of the United States.
OTTERBEIN College
Location: Westerville, Ohio
Colors: Tan and Cardinal
Conference: Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)
Coach: Larry Lintner, 3-5-1 (1966-69. Four years: 10-25-1, .278)
Nickname: Cardinals, the mascot is “Cardy.” Initially, as with most other universities, the athletic teams were referred to by their colors. In Otterbein’s case it was either the Tans or the Cardinals. When the State of Ohio officially adopted the cardinal as the state bird the term Cardinals started catching on. It wasn’t until after WWII that the nickname Cardinals became prevalent through the efforts of coach and athletic director Robert “Moe” Agler. However, there has been a long battle between using the term Cardinals or changing the nickname “Otters,” which is not used by any institution in the NCAA. Both nicknames are used interchangeably.
University Background: Otterbein University was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and named for United Brethren founder the Rev. Philip William Otterbein. After the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, in 1968, Otterbein has been associated with the United Methodist Church. It was Otterbein University from 1847 to 1917, when it changed to Otterbein College. In 2010, with the increase in courses and graduate degrees it reverted to its original name, Otterbein University.

Quarterback Norm Lukey broke the Otterbein College career passing mark for total yardage Saturday night as the Cardinals ended a five game victory drought with a surprisingly low-scoring 14-3 victory over visiting Hiram.
Lukey, only a junior with one game remaining this season, completed 26 of 40 passing attempts attempts for 220 yards to run his three-season aerial total to 3,653 yards. The old mark of 3,460 was held by Larry Cline, 1957-60.
The Carfdinals, who lost four in a row and were tied by Heidelberg (14-14) last week after a pair of victories to start the season, had to come from behind to down the Terriers.
