Abstract
The 1882 diary of Lucinda Merriss Cornell focuses on her life and work at home in Westerville, Ohio, with family and with friends and acquaintances. It begins with shopping lists and cash accounts. For example, Lucinda keeps track of the money paid to Professor Todd for music lessons. This diary includes news about known persons. Notable dates include:
January 12: Blanche’s 14th birthday!
January 14: Vaccinated Abbie “Eva” Geneva Cornell.
March 7: Emma Wellens baby (Carrie) is sick.
March 12: Emma Wellens baby Carrie died.
July 3: Attended the funeral of Willard(?) Hatfield, a recent Otterbein graduate aged 21 years.
July 15: Took children to have their pictures taken in a group; got 3 tin type for 50¢ apiece.
July 21: Willie Wellen (also called Wellens) died, widowing Emma. Mr. Drake came to board with the Cornell family.
July 30: Old Mrs. Brinkerhoff died.
August 26: Mr. Drake left for Columbus after boarding with Cornell’s for 5 weeks.
September 4: Wm. (William) Cooper died.
September 18: Aunt Jennie Cornell arrives for a visit.
October 5: Went to college grounds for the soldier’s reunion.
November 1: Jennie Cornell left on train to Columbus.
November 11: Eva’s 11th birthday!
November 16: Frank “Holly” Holland Cornell went to school for the first time.
December 18: Receives post from Charley Rogers that Mrs. Merriss, Lucinda’s mother, is weak and sick.
December 19: Lucinda & Ori took train to Columbus to see her ill mother.
