One doesn’t often think of a rain forest existing in this country. This forest on the Olympic Peninsula averages twelve to fourteen feet of rain annually. By comparison, Seattle– just 100 miles away– receives 36 inches during the year. Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Douglas Fir can reach over 300 feet tall and 23 feet in diameter. The average age of these Goliaths is well over 500 years old. Almost every tree is covered in thick blankets of moss. This is as pure as air gets. The moss absorbs sound. As a result, this sanctuary is silent. The only thing I heard was the voice inside my head… “How fantastic this place.”
