Otterbein has been truly fortunate in the men and women who have served it over the years: Davis, Haywood, Guitner,
McFadden, Sanders, Scott, and many others. In connection with the 1947 Centennial, Ralph W. and Helen Ensor Smith ('12 and '18) began collecting biographies and autobiographies of some of the people who had played an important role in the development and growth of the school. This was done with the thought that a future historian might use these sketches in writing a history of Otterbein based primarily on the lives of these people and their influence. Considerable material was gathered and preliminary editing accomplished. After Mr. Smith's death,
Mrs. Smith gave the entire collection to the college.
