Burgess “Red” Peverly Shaffer (1906-1973) was born to Austin Shaffer and Stella in Somerset, PA. He had one brother, Glen, who would go on to be a minister in Westerville. Burgess came to Otterbein in 1924, and after graduation he returned home. In 1934, Burgess married Mildred Irene Stevanus. Together they had two children, Rodney and Beverly. Burgess worked as an electrician for the Pennsylvania Electric Company, and was a lay leader at the First United Methodist Church.
The scrapbook contains an athletic record for various sporting events, a list of social functions, and records of theatrical and other entertainment events. It has photos of buildings, students, nearby locations like Alum Creek and Crystal Springs, and campus events such as parades and sporting events. It has a photo of the Choir of the College Church. The last portion of the scrapbook contains various campus memorabilia. There are sports programs and tickets, newspaper clippings, literary society booklets, programs from performances and recitals, and commencement documents.
